With water and air temperatures starting to fall, fishing is starting to slow a little and so are people fishing. Current water temperature is 54 degrees, but don't let this fool you fish are still active and we are still having some good reports. We have had some good reports of Crappie being caught around the fishing docks. Minnows and jigs have been the hot item for Crappie, primarily around the fishing docks in 10'-15' of water. Not many reports of Saugeye or catfish, but if you are willing to put in a little extra time and effort and have access to a boat you will have more success.
We still have plenty of minnows so come in and get the last batch for the winter. Once we run out of our current stock we will resume selling minnows in the Spring. Be sure to send us your fishing photos so we can post them on our Facebook and "Fishing Friends" walls in the bait shops! Email them to [email protected] or post them to our Facebook at Lake McMurtry Friends! It's almost summer and the fishing is GOOD at Lake McMurtry! Elevation is right at normal, the water temps are around 63 degrees and murky from the rain we've been getting recently. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs at 10 - 12 feet around the fishing docks and brush structures. Saugeye have been catching really well on crankbait, sassy shad, and minnows at 5 - 10 ft around the sandbar, near the docks, and shorelines. Channel catfish have been good on worms, dough bait, and chicken liver at 5 - 15 ft along brush structures, docks, and the sandbar.
Be sure to send us your fishing photos so we can post them on our Facebook and "Fishing Friends" walls in the bait shops! Email them to [email protected] or post them to our Facebook at Lake McMurtry Friends! The East fishing dock is repaired and open for use! Also, we have minnows and worms for sale at both bait shops. The crappie have been good on jigs off the West fishing dock and fishing house. Due to high winds on February 18th - the East fishing dock is closed for repairs until further notice. We are sorry for any inconvenience! Now that the weather is warming up - and might stay that way (or maybe not - it is Oklahoma!) we are seeing more and more fisherman on both sides of the lake. Crappie have been good on jigs near the West fishing house and out near the spillway.
While we don't typically carry minnows until mid to late March, since the weather is so nice and people are asking for them - we now have minnows! If you have any updates, want to share your tips, or have any pictures of fish caught at Lake McMurtry - please leave us a comment so we can share! |
