Winter has officially arrived in Oklahoma!
While the cold weather has slowed down the catching a little, fishing for crappie has still remained good and many fishermen have had good luck on jigs and minnows. The water is fairly clear and around 40 degrees. A side note: our bait shops have stopped selling minnows for the winter months and will pick back up in the early spring!

Happy Labor Day!
We hope all of our visitors had or are having a great Labor Day Weekend! We have definitely been seeing some hotter temperatures this past week and today is no exception. The fishing tends to slow down when it gets this hot - but we are still getting reports of fish being caught! Our water elevation is still hanging out around 1.5 feet below normal, is around 80 degrees, and semi-clear. The crappie have been good on minnows and jigs at 10 feet around docks, brush structures, and the spillway. White bass have been caught on crankbaits around 4 feet along the sandbar and the main channel. Catfish have been popular this past week mainly being caught on worms and cut bait. We are looking forward to the cooler temperatures that are being promised over the next week and hoping the fishing continues being good! We've been having some different temperatures the last few days for August in Oklahoma but the heat is about to return with a vengeance!
Lake McMurtry's elevation is just under normal pool and the water is in the lower 80's and semi-clear. Crappie have been good on minnows and jigs around the docks, brush structures, and at the sandbar. Some white bass have been caught in the past few days near the spillway and a few channel catfish around the West fishing house and dock. The hot summer temps are here and they will probably be sticking around for awhile! If you can stand the heat, the fishing at McMurtry has been pretty good the past two weeks! The lake is still about a foot below normal elevation, in the mid 70's, and semi-murky from the rain we got last week. Saugeye have been good on minnows and crankbaits at 6 - 12 ft around docks and the sandbars. White bass have been fair on crankbaits at 4 - 6 ft along the rocky shore, sandbars, and the main lake.
In the past few days, channel catfish have been picking up and one visitor caught a 4 lb catfish that already had 3 hooks in its mouth! She said he was definitely a fighter and a fun catch! The 4th is just around the corner and fishing is picking up at McMurtry! The water is still about a foot below normal elevation, in the mid 70s and semi-clear. Channel catfish are good on live shad, worm and chicken liver at 6-12 ft. along docks and sandbar. White bass are good on crankbaits at 4-6 ft. along sandbar.
A couple was out on the East dock around 11:30 pm on June 30th and caught a 4 1/2 lb 24 in saugeye (seen below) and then the next cast, caught a 2 lb crappie! We love when the fishing is good! |
