Outdoor Recreation and Education Director

Lake McMurtry Friends seeks a responsible, energetic person excited to share their knowledge and love of the outdoors with people of all ages and backgrounds.  The Outdoor Recreation and Education Director will lead programming centered around providing outdoor experiences for youth, adults and families to promote the appreciation, understanding, enjoyment and responsible use of natural resources.  

Job Summary
The Outdoor Recreation and Education Director will be responsible for developing programs and learning experiences to engage the community in sustainable outdoor recreation, environmental education and nature conservation.  

Responsibilities
  • Prepare thematic, place-based environmental education, leadership, and community building lesson plans that meet the needs of diverse student populations, are culturally relevant, transferable for students and incorporate the learning objectives of the program.  
  • Work independently on projects such as curriculum development, the creation of teaching tools, and logistical tasks.  
  • Prepare academic lessons on forest and watershed ecology, map and compass, geology, weather and climate, outdoor skills, community building and leadership development.
  • Lead multi-day wilderness programs that include single and combined element trips including hiking, backpacking, camping, canoeing and kayaking.
  • Deliver curriculum focused on outdoor skills, wilderness ethics, leadership development, public lands and community building. 
  • Lead and facilitate student-centered, experiential programs during Adventure Camp for youth ages 7-12. 
  • Develop and manage Adventure Camp curriculum and staff.
  • Manage Adventure Camp social media.
  • Facilitate day programs within local communities and at schools.  
  • Create and foster an inclusive group culture and learning environment among participants and co-workers.  
  • Coordinate conservation and student research projects.
  • Assist with identifying and writing grants.
  • Responsible for developing website content as it pertains to programming.
  • Engage in and assist with marketing and outreach efforts.
  • Represent Lake McMurtry Friends at events and activities in relevant park and recreation associations.
  • Increase personal knowledge and skills through professional development.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Assist in on-call rotations.

Qualifications
  • Friendly, outgoing, flexible personality with a commitment and enthusiasm for teaching outdoor recreation and environmental education.
  • 2 years experiential teaching experience. 
  • Able to create an emotionally safe and inclusive learning environment, create a positive group culture, and build healthy rapport with youth. 
  • Model responsible behavior in the outdoors and Leave No Trace ethics.
  • Bachelor’s degree with course work in natural sciences, experiential education, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license with excellent driving record and reliable transportation
  • Must pass a background check
